Child & Teen Therapy

"All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and somebody who believes in them."

- Magic Johnson

Children and adolescents go through different challenges as a normal part of their childhood, but what about when the challenges are abnormal or a child is having an abnormal response? Children, like adults, experience a wide range of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that can significantly impact their mental health. From anxiety and depression to trauma and behavioral difficulties, therapy provides a safe and supportive space for children to explore and express their feelings, learn coping skills, and develop strategies to navigate life's challenges.

Our Priority is Child Well-Being

In therapy, the focus on child's well-being and mental health is paramount, as it forms the cornerstone of their overall development and future success. Every session is dedicated to understanding and addressing the unique needs, challenges, and strengths of the child, with the overarching goal of promoting their psychological and emotional well-being.

Here are commonly addressed concerns with children/teens-

  • anxiety

  • bullying

  • behavior/oppositional issues

  • depression

  • divorce/separation

  • emotional expression

  • family conflict

  • grief/loss

  • school problems

  • self-esteem

  • substance abuse

  • suicidal ideation

Our Approach to Child and Adolescent Therapy

Children and adolescents express emotions differently than adults. Our child therapists and adolescent therapists use age-appropriate, evidence-based approaches that help young clients feel safe, understood, and supported.

Depending on the child’s age and needs, therapy may include:

  • Play-based and expressive child therapy techniques

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) adapted for children and teens

  • Emotion regulation and coping skills development

  • Problem-solving and communication skills training

  • Support for identity development and self-esteem

  • Family-based child therapy to improve connection and understanding

Our goal is not only symptom relief, but long-term skill development that supports children and teens across home, school, and relationships.

Parent & Caregiver Involvement

Effective therapy for children and adolescents includes thoughtful parent and caregiver involvement. While children and teens may attend individual sessions, parents are an important part of the therapeutic process.

Parent involvement may include:

  • Parent check-ins or joint family sessions

  • Guidance on supporting emotional and behavioral skills at home

  • Coaching around communication, boundaries, and emotional regulation

  • Support for families navigating separation, divorce, or co-parenting challenges

We balance a child’s need for privacy with a parent’s need for guidance and support.

What to Expect

Initial child therapy session

The first session focuses on understanding your child’s concerns, strengths, and family context. For younger children, this may include play-based observation. For adolescents, therapy often includes individual time with the therapist.

Ongoing child or adolescent counseling

Sessions are typically weekly and adjusted over time based on progress. Goals are reviewed collaboratively and adapted as skills develop.

Measuring progress

Progress is reflected through improved emotional regulation, behavior changes, stronger communication skills, and increased coping — not just conversation, but meaningful, observable growth.
